What are onlays and inlays?
Onlays and inlays have much in common. Their purpose, for example, is the same. Each of them are created to restore teeth. Much like composite fillings and crowns, onlays and inlays are used to treat cavities. Each method is used for the same purpose, but in accordance to the size of the cavity. Composite fillings aid smaller cavities, while crowns treat very large cavities. Onlays and inlays help those that are in-between.
Onlays are used for teeth like molars, that have a large tooth surface with cusps or bumps, while inlays are used for flatter tooth surfaces. Each of them is secured to an affected tooth with dental cement after dentists have treated the tooth, therefore restoring it.
